Choking Wheelchair User – First Aid A wheelchair poses no real obstacle in the delivery of first aid for choking as only minor variances in technique are needed. Set the wheelchair brake before providing first aid. Back blows are delivered with the patient seated. Support the patient as needed. If the design of the wheelchair allows you to reach around from behind to give abdominal thrusts, then do so. If not, then back the wheelchair against a wall and apply the brake. Place the heel of one hand on the midline of the patient’s abdomen but below the rib cage. Cover it with your other hand.

• Continue alternating back-blows and chest thrusts until the obstruction is cleared or the infant becomes unconscious.
