3 Airway and Breathing

Environmental and Industrial Exposure These types of injuries frequently occur in an industrial or agricultural setting. Fumes from pesticides, cleaning products, chemicals, chlorine, and other gases can be accidentally released and inhaled by people. Super heated air, steam, and fire can burn the airway and lungs. Carbon monoxide, an odourless gas, is released during combustion of fuel, and is toxic in closed spaces. In cases where the patient has been contaminated with a chemical or poison, ensure they are decontaminated by trained personnel before providing care.
