Premergency First Aid, CPR and AED Manual

3 Airway and Breathing

1. Check the inhaler for the patient’s name and the expiry date. Out of date medication should not prevent its use if it is the only medication available. 2. Shake the container and remove the cap. 3. Have the patient exhale completely. 4. With the mouthpiece at or within 5 cm of their lips, have them breathe in deeply. Press the canister to deliver the medication as they inhale. 5. Have the patient hold their breath for ten seconds and then breath normally. 6. Wait 30 to 60 seconds for medication to begin working. If no improvement and the prescription allows, assist the patient with a second dose. 7. Some patients may have a sore or dry throat after taking their medication. As long as they are not having any difficulty breathing you may provide them with water to rinse their mouth or gargle.
