Premergency First Aid, CPR and AED Manual

3 Airway and Breathing

Summary The signs and symptoms of airway and breathing difficulty include unusual breath sounds, use of accessory muscles, nasal flaring, pursed lips, cyanosis, and sitting in the tripod position, which allows the diaphragm more room to function. First aid for airway and breathing problems may include: Airway management – head tilt/chin lift. Clearing of the airway. Patient positioning – usually semi-reclined or a position of comfort that makes breathing easier. First aid for any contributing injury – bleeding or FBAO due to trauma.

Assistance with medications – a MDI or an auto injector.

Remember that a person breathing rapidly may not be getting enough oxygen due to a number of serious medical issues. In all cases, quick recognition of an airway or breathing problem and prompt first aid and transport to medical care are essential.
