4 Circulation and Shock

Keeping the patient warm reduces the energy the body has to use for this purpose. Cover the patient but do not let them overheat. Here are some types of shock using the mneumonic SHOCK: • S eptic (infection) or Spinal (injury to spine) • H emorrhagic (internal or external bleeding) • O bstructive (airway obstruction or lung injury) • C ardiogenic (heart attack or heart related injury) • K Anaphylactic(k) - (severe allergic reaction)

ABC’s - Treat Life Threats Secondary Assessment

• Sitting or position on their side • Treat the chief complaint • Reassure/reassess • ABCD’s • Warm (keep the patient warm)

Signs and Symptoms Severe Shock

Ongoing Care/Transport

• Monitor LOC and ABCs. • Give nothing by mouth • Be prepared to provide CPR if breathing becomes ineffective or ceases Hand-Off and Documentation

• Altered level of consciousness • Laboured or irregular breathing • No radial pulse in arms • Mottled, ashen, or cyanotic skin • Thirst
