First Aider in Action: Part 2 As you approach the couple, others gather, including two waiters and the hostess. As you are assessing the scene, you identify yourself as a first aider and offer to help. The man, Jim, is approximately 45 and is slightly overweight. He is conscious and alert but clearly in obvious discomfort. His skin looks pale and sweaty, and he complains of a painful tightness in his chest that is getting worse. Quickly getting his SAMPLE history, you confirm the patient takes medication for high blood pressure and has a family history of heart disease. He says that he has never felt these symptoms before and describes his pain as 7 out of 10. Prior to dinner he says that he had been a little ‘off ’, with some mild feeling of indigestion.
1. Should you activate 911 or wait? Why or why not? 2. What resources do you have available to you? 3. What first aid can you give the patient?
