First Aider in Action: Part 4 You provide ongoing care for Jim, monitoring his ABCs and keeping himwarmwith a blanket from the first aid kit. You also prepare for the paramedics arriving, having the hostess clear a path for the paramedic crew and the stretcher. You also make sure that someone is waiting outside to guide them to the patient. The paramedics soon arrive and take over the scene. You identify yourself and introduce Jim and his wife, describing his signs, symptoms, medical history, and vital signs. You also tell them that Jim has chewed one aspirin. The paramedics transfer Jim to the stretcher quickly as they confirm some of the information you provided and ask Jim some questions of their own.

Soon he is secured, breathing oxygen, and on his way to the ambulance. As Jim is put in the ambulance, one of the paramedics starts hooking him up to a heart monitor. Jim’s wife thanks you as she and the other paramedic climb into the front cab of the ambulance. Why did the paramedics give the patient oxygen ?
