Seizure Assessment and First Aid Scene Assessment – Scene Safety Activate 911 / Get Help / Get First Aid Kit / Get AED Primary Assessment ABC’s - Treat life threats - Recovery Position Secondary Assessment • After placing the patient in the recovery position • Protect the patient from harm • Try to place padding under the patient’s head • Loosen tight clothing at the neck, chest and waist Ongoing Care/ Transport • Assess LOC and ABC’s, perform a secondary scan • Cover the patient and keep them warm • Reassure, allow patient to rest and recover Hand-Off and Documentation Get medical help for any patient who is experiencing their first seizure, seizes for more than 5 minutes or seizes repeatedly without regaining consciousness.

First Aider in Action: Part 3 As paramedics arrive, you continue to provide ongoing care, monitoring the patient’s consciousness and her breathing. The patient has woken up and is opening her eyes though she still appears drowsy. Speaking softly and calmly, you introduce yourself explaining that the paramedics will take care of her now. As the patient becomes more aware, you continue to reassure her and advise her to rest and let the paramedics care for her.
