1. Control bleeding with direct pressure. 2. Apply a dressing and maintain direct pressure. If dressing becomes soaked through with blood, do not remove. 3. Apply additional dressings on top and continue direct pressure. 4. Secure the bandage with tape or a fastener or by tying with a reef knot. Tuck any loose ends so they do not get caught on anything, pulling the bandage or causing discomfort to the patient. Once bleeding is controlled, apply a bandage to the dressing. Wrap the bandage so that the entire dressing is covered and even pressure is maintained over the wound. Dressing should be snug but not tight.

5. Check for perfusion below the injury. 6. If perfusion is impaired, reassess bandage and loosen if too tight. Recheck perfusion frequently until medical help takes over.
