7 Bleeding, Wound Care and Trauma

Head and Face injury Injuries to the head and face are treated like all emergencies. After ensuring scene safety and treating any life threats, apply direct pressure with a gloved hand and dressing until bleeding is controlled. The head and face contain a great many blood vessels and even small wounds may bleed profusely, looking worse than they may be. Some patient’s are sensitive to being touched around the head and face. Minimize patient discomfort by explaining your actions and working carefully.

Injury to the head or the face may indicate a spinal injury. Determine the MOI and take precautions to protect the patient’s neck.
