7 Bleeding, Wound Care and Trauma

Primary blast injury often affects the lungs. Patients may have difficulty breathing and chest pain, and they cough up frothy pink sputum (bloody saliva). Treat life threats. Position the patient to make breathing easier. Provide first aid for shock and internal bleeding. Be prepared to provide CPR if breathing stops. Secondary blast injury may be penetrating or blunt force injury. Treat life threats. Control bleeding with direct pressure. Provide first aid for shock and internal breathing. Be prepared to provide CPR if breathing stops.
