During the scene assessment, ensure the snake is no longer a threat. A rattlesnake rarely travels more than 10 meters from the location of a bite initially.
Snakebite Snakes are generally not a threat to humans and almost all snakes will try to avoid contact. Occasionally a snake will perceive a person as a threat and bite in defense. There are many types of poisonous snakes in the world. Learning about the type of snakes in your area, their habits, and the first aid for each type of snake venom can be life saving knowledge. Rattlesnakes are the only poisonous snake found in Canada. Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia all have different species of rattlesnake but they are not numerous and bites to humans are rare.
