Premergency First Aid, CPR and AED Manual
8 Muscle, Bone and Joint Injuries
First Aider in Action: Part 2 As you crouch down next to the patient, you look at her carefully. She is a woman in her mid 20s and is conscious and appears alert. Her colour looks pale. She is lying on her back and clearly in pain. Her shallow breathing appears adequate. Another woman has just finished telling her not to move. You quickly introduce yourself and your training, offering to help. The woman introduces herself as Meghan, an off duty paramedic, and the patient as Veronica. Meghan asks you to steady and support the patient’s head as she quickly begins running through SAMPLE questions with Veronica. At the same time you see her taking a set of vital signs. Veronica says she has pain in her ankle, hip, and
both arms. She says one wrist is particularly painful. What else can you do to help the patient at this time? What other resources can you apply to the scene or patient care?
