First aid Splinting a Femur Fracture • Steady and support the injured leg. • Expose the injury. Dress, pad, and bandage any open fractures. • If medical help will be delayed or you need to prepare the patient for transport, you will need to splint the leg. • Assess and gather available splinting material and decide on the type of splint. • Pass bandages under the natural hollows of the body and into position as shown. • Pad the splints and position them.
• Starting at the top and working down, bandage the splints in place. • Do not bandage directly over the injury. • Check perfusion below the injury frequently. Adjust bandages and splints as necessary.
Another way of splinting a femur fracture is to use the other leg and tie them together, similar to immobilizing a pelvic fracture.
