8 Muscle, Bone and Joint Injuries

fracture – Any break in the continuity of a bone. joint – Formed every time two bones come in contact. musculoskeletal system – The bones and muscles in the body. paradoxical movement – Abnormal or the opposite of expected movement. RISE – A mnemonic used to remember how to treat muscle, bone, and joint injuries: rest, ice, splint, elevation. SMR – Spinal motion restriction. splint – A device used to immobilize an injury.

sprain – An injury to the ligaments, tendons, and capsule of the joint. strain – The tearing or stretching of muscle tissue that may cause pain, swelling, and/or bruising. subluxation – A partial dislocation where the disruption of the joint is not complete.
