Premergency First Aid, CPR and AED Manual

Like burns, the depth of tissue damage can vary. Superficial frostbite affects only the skin while deep frostbite affects deeper tissues as well.
It may not be possible to assess outside of a hospital whether frostbite is superficial or deep. Even a doctor may need several days to determine the extent of the damage. First aid for frostbite focuses on the ABCs and preventing further heat loss. Thawing of a frostbitten part should be done by medical personnel. Avoid having the patient use the injured part as the movement of ice crystals within the tissues can cause further damage. If the injury is to the feet or legs and you must transport the patient to medical help, avoid having the patient walk. Use a stretcher or rescue carry if able (See Chapter 10, Lifting and Moving).
