Poisoning and drug overdose A poison or toxin can be any substance that causes harm when absorbed by the body. Many different poisonous and toxic substances are all around us in our everyday lives. Many of them are clearly identified, such as cleaning products, pesticides and fertilizers. Others include plants and contaminated food or medications. Taking the wrong medication or one that is not prescribed for you can cause an adverse reaction as well. Many substances that are safe within limits but become toxic in larger amounts. An overdose is when a patient takes too much medication or other drug.
