9 Other Emergencies

Anatomy of the female reproductive system Fetus – An unborn baby. Uterus – Also called the womb. The muscular structure where the baby develops from conception to birth. Placenta – An organ that develops inside the uterus with the fetus during pregnancy. The placenta supplies blood with nutrients and oxygen to the fetus from the mother. Umbilical cord – A tube that carries blood from the placenta to the fetus. Amnionic sac – A bag like structure surrounding the fetus. The sac is full of amnionic fluid, a liquid that surrounds and protects the fetus. Cervix – The entrance to the uterus which dilates (opens) to allow the fetus to be born. Vagina – The muscular passage that the fetus passes through during birth.
