Premergency First Aid, CPR and AED Manual

1 Introduction to First Aid

Remember, training and regular practice of first aid skills will minimize many of the negative effects of acute stress reactions. Frequent pauses to stop, look and think, to reorient yourself to the entire scene, help you keep the big picture in focus. Work quickly but avoid rushing. Think of the steps you need to accomplish and remain calm. Chronic Stress is defined by a prolonged or recurring stress response. This response may continue beyond the occurence of the initial stressor. After an emergency, the first aider may be left with nervous, excited energy that may continue to build and cause distraction. Management techniques for chronic stress include processing your thoughts on the incident, talking with others that were involved, physical exercise, proper hydration, nutrition, and rest.

Acute Stress Management Techniques If you begin to feel overwhelmed by the combined effects of an emergency scene you can experience some of the negative effects of acute stress. Remain calm and use these techniques to regain your composure: • Breathe evenly in through your mouth and out through your nose. • Remind yourself of your training and that people need your help. • Talk aloud while going through the steps of assessment and aid. • Pause for a moment. Close your eyes and count to ten.
