2 PREmergency Scene Management
Assess Airway As you assess and treat your patient you must be constantly alert for signs of airway obstruction. This must be a recurring process. If the patient does not have an open (patent) airway you must provide or obtain one. Without a patent airway, all other interventions will be in vain.

Signs of obstruction in the unconscious Obvious trauma blood or other obstruction
• Noisy breathing, such as bubbling, gurgling, whistling/ crowing, any abnormal sound • Shallow or absent breathing, airway obstruction may impair breathing
