If any of these conditions exist, the airway is considered not patent. You must work quickly to obtain a patent airway for the patient to survive. Remember that positioning a patient for airway management depends on the age and size of your patient. Trauma patients or unconscious patients with an unknown MOI/NOI must have their C-spine protected when opening the airway. Signs of Airway Obstruction Obvious Trauma, blood or other obstruction. Noisy Breathing, such as snoring, bubbling, gurgling, whistling/crowing, any abnormal sound. Extremely Shallow or absent breathing, Airway obstruction may impair breathing.
Other possible causes of airway obstruction in an unconscious patient can include dentures, blood, vomit, mucous, food, and foreign in objects.
