Identifying and Treating Life Threats There are many conditions that present a threat to life. The key role of the Premergency first aider is to identify and manage these conditions. The body often follows a process when reacting to a life threat. Of primary importance to life is a functioning brain and heart. The brain cannot survive without oxygenated blood from the heart and within minutes cells become damaged, leading to irreversible brain damage and in some cases death if circulation is not restored soon enough. Many times the conditions are reversible but you must identify them quickly and take immediate action to correct them. This is the purpose of the primary assessment. A probable loss of meaningful communication with the patient is followed by decreased awareness, eventual loss of all communication, and then unconsciousness. When the patient no longer responds
