Secondary Scan Perform a complete head to toe exam and look for additional injuries or complaints. The head to toe exam is your opportunity to fully examine the patient. It is the follow up to your initial quick scan. As mentioned earlier, there is no need to examine a patient for unlikely injuries. Use the additional information gathered from the patient history and vital signs to guide you in determining how much of the secondary scan to do. Remember that any patient with a severe MOI or altered LOC should have a secondary assessment. If required, be sure to maintain proper c-spine protection throughout the exam. DOTS as used in the primary assessment will examine each part in more depth.
