2 PREmergency Scene Management

Care - Treat any additional injuries or complaints Treatment of injuries or complaints can only be effective if you take the time to fully examine the areas of complaint. Once you have a complete picture of any additional injuries, you can prioritize their treatment. (see quick reference chart on the next page) It may be necessary for you to expose areas of the patient’s body to enable proper examination and treatment. This is best done by cutting away the patient’s clothing. Trying to remove clothing may result in twisting or pulling on the patient and further exacerbate any injury. Be sure to explain to your patient what you are doing and why. Do as much as possible to preserve patient dignity. If you need to expose a part of a patient’s body for assessment or treatment, cover it again when done, even if the patient is unconscious. This also helps keep the patient warm and protects from shock (See Chapter 4 – Circulation and Shock).
