3 Airway and Breathing
Assisting with Anaphylaxis medication 1. Check the injector for the patient’s name and the expiry date. If the only available auto injector is expired, check that the liquid remains clear before using. 2. Remove the injector from its tube. 3. EpiPen® • Hold firmly with the orange tip pointing down. • Remove the blue safety release. Allerject® • Listen to the electronic voice instructions. • If the electronic voice instructions do not work, follow the written instructions located on the auto-injector. 4. Firmly press the Orange tip of the EpiPen®, or the black end on the Allerject ® on the fleshy part in the middle of the outer thigh until it ‘clicks’. (see image)

Loosen tight clothing around the neck, chest, and waist. • Assist the patient to take any prescribed medication Ongoing Care/Transport • Provide care for shock • Monitor patient’s airway and breathing • Be prepared to provide CPR if breathing becomes ineffective or ceases Hand-Off and Documentation
