Premergency First Aid, CPR and AED Manual

5 Cardiovascular Emergencies, CPR and AED You may provide CPR to a patient you discover unresponsive and not breathing or to a patient that becomes that way during first aid. In either case, the first aid is the same: • If you have not already done so, activate 911 and get an AED. • Begin CPR. • Use an AED as soon as possible. CPR helps a person in cardiac arrest because it maintains a level of perfusion (helping keep cells and tissue alive), and it extends the time that defibrillation can be effective. Compression-only CPR If you have not been trained in CPR or you choose not to provide rescue breaths, then you can still be an effective part in the chain of survival. Recognizing an emergency, activating 911, and getting an AED to the patient as soon as possible are vitally important.

Compression-only CPR removes the rescue breathing and consists of providing hard and fast compressions to the chest at a rate of at least 100-120 compressions per minute. CPR is as easy as 1-2-3. 1) Assess Responsiveness/Call 911 2) Check for Breathing 3) Not breathing - BEGIN CPR.
