Cardiac Arrest Assessment and First Aid Scene Assessment - Scene Safety Activate 911 / Get Help / Get First Aid Kit / Get AED Primary Assessment Not breathing – Begin CPR (attach AED) • Place patient on a firm surface • Give 30 chest compressions • Open the airway and give 2 rescue breaths Continue chest compressions and rescue breaths at a ratio of 30:2 for five cycles. Reassess for breathing. Secondary Assessment Ongoing Care/Transport • Continue CPR/AED until the patient becomes responsive and starts breathing, medical help takes over or you are too exhausted to continue. • If patient becomes responsive, then place in the recovery position and protect from shock. Hand-Off and Documentation

Signs and Symptoms Cardiac Arrest

• Unresponsive • Not breathing (may be grunts or gasps, called agonal breathing, but no air exchange)
