5 Cardiovascular Emergencies, CPR and AED
Chest compressions: 30 for every 2 breaths at a rate of 100 -120 compressions/minute Rescue Breaths: 2 • Kneel next to the patient and place one hand on the centre of their chest, over the breastbone. Cover it with your other hand, interlacing your fingers. • Lean forward so your shoulders are directly over the patient. • With elbows locked, press the heels of your hands straight down to a depth of at least 5 cm (2 inches) not exceeding 6 cm (2.4 inches) • Release your weight, allowing the chest to rise completely. • Give 30 compressions at a rate of 100-120/min. Push hard and fast. Maintain an even rate/rhythm. • Open the airway and give two rescue breaths. • Repeat the cycle of 30:2 compressions and rescue breaths until patient responds, an AED is attached, medical help takes over, or you are too exhausted to continue.
