5 Cardiovascular Emergencies, CPR and AED

First Aider in Action: Part 3 Jim displays the signs and symptoms of a heart attack. You know that although there may be other reasons, it is important to get help right away. Keeping your voice calm, you ask the hostess to activate 911 and to bring a first aid kit and AED if available. You make sure Jim is comfortable and his clothes are loosened to make breathing easier. A waiter returns with a first aid kit. After making sure Jim has no allergy to ASA, you have him chew and swallow an aspirin. The hostess returns and says that paramedics are on the way. While you wait, you reassure Jim and his wife and obtain a full set of vital signs. He is still conscious/ alert.

His respirations are 18/min with good depth and his pulse is 98. His skin colour remains pale. You reassess his pain, and he says that it might be a little bit better, making it easier to breath. What is the next component of PREmergency Scene Management (PSM) and how will you provide it for this patient while you manage this emergency?
