Using an AED Always read and follow the manufacturer’s directions. 1. Turn the AED unit on. Some machines will turn on automatically when the cover is opened. Others will have a clearly marked power button. 2. Attach electrode pad cable to the AED. Some AEDs 3. Bare the patient’s chest. If the patient has a hairy chest you may need to shave it. The AED should include a disposable razor. If the chest is wet, dry it or wipe away excess moisture before applying pads. 4. Peel the protective material off the electrode pads to expose the adhesive and apply the pads to the patient’s chest. Follow the diagram for pad placement printed on the pads or shown on the AED. have adult and infant/pediatric pads. If available, use infant pads on infants.

5. Clear all people away from the patient. Make sure no one is touching the patient. 6. Press the ‘Analyze’ button on the AED (some units begin analyzing as soon as the pads are attached). 7. Once the machine has analyzed the patient, it will advise either ‘Shock’ or ‘No Shock’.
