Pads should be placed approximately 2.5 cm away from such devices. If a patient has a medication patch where a pad needs to be, then carefully remove the patch. Be careful not to touch the adhesive side of the patch as this can transfer medication to you. Save the used patch to show Paramedic personnel. Correct and Proper Pad Placement AED Pads should be placed on a “bare” and dry chest. Follow the pictures on the pads which indicate the following: 1. One pad is to be placed on the right hand side of the patient’s chest. Specifically right of the breast bone (sternum) and under the right collar bone in any direction. 2. The second pad is to be placed on the left hand side of the patient’s chest at the last rib in the “mid axilla” (armpit line) in any direction.

For both male and female patients, all undergarments have to be removed so the AED pads can adhere to a bare chest. If the patient’s chest is hairy, the area in which the pads are placed should be shaved to ensure adherence of the AED pads. Maintain the patient’s dignity at all times.
