AEDs – Special Populations
AED ‘No Shock Required’ Algorithm
1. AED analyzes - No Shock Advised 2. Assess for breathing. 3. If the patient is not breathing, resume CPR for five cycles of 30:2 compressions and rescue breaths.
Infants and Children Most AEDs will have smaller size pads or have an alternate setting for use with infants/children. If the device is not equipped this way, it can still be used. Check the directions with the device for alternate placement options for using adult pads with infants/ children. Usually this means putting one pad on the centre of the infant/child’s chest at the breastbone and one pad on the infant/child’s back between the shoulder blades. Pacemakers, implanted medical devices, and patch medications Avoid placing pads over any implanted medical devices such as pacemakers, implanted defibrillators, and medication ports. Look for bumps under the skin (usually under left collar bone) or surgical scars that can indicate a device. If these internal devices do not interfere with placement of pads proceed as normal.
