Premergency First Aid, CPR and AED Manual

5 Cardiovascular Emergencies, CPR and AED 6. What first aid can you give the patient? First aid includes making it easier for the patient to breath, keeping them comfortable, and reassuring them, their family, and their friends. If the patient has no allergy and has not been advised against taking aspirin, have them chew one regular or two low-dose tablets. 7. What is the next component of PSM and how will you provide it for this patient while you manage this emergency? Ongoing care is the next component of PSM. Keep the patient comfortable and monitor their ABCs. Be prepared to provide CPR and use an AED if they stop breathing.

8. Why did the paramedics give the patient oxygen? Patients with cardiovascular problems have a reduced level of perfusion. If the amount of oxygen being perfused falls too low, then tissue begins to starve and die. Reduced levels of perfusion to the heart are responsible for the pain of angina or a heart attack. Medical personnel can use oxygen to improve perfusion. Improved perfusion reduces pain, reduces the workload of the heart, and helps prevent tissue damage.
