Vital Vocabulary acute coronary syndrome (ACS) – A term used to describe the symptoms and problems caused by ischemia in the arteries of the heart. acute myocardial infarction (AMI) – The actual death of heart cells when they are cut off from oxygen after blood flow is obstructed to an area. angina – Chest pain that occurs when the heart’s need for oxygen is more than the supply. artificial circulation – Chest compressions that circulate blood to the brain, organs, and body. artificial respiration – Rescue breaths that provide oxygen to the lungs.

automated external defibrillator (AED) – An electronic device that analyzes a patient and provides an electric shock (defibrillation) to a patient who is in cardiac arrest. BLS – Basic Life Support

CAB – Compressions, Airway, Breathing cardiac arrest – A complete lack of effective mechanical (pumping) activity in the heart.

congestive heart failure – A condition where blood begins to back up and pool in the body when the heart becomes so damaged or compromised that it cannot keep up with the return flow of blood. cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) – Combines two basic life support (BLS) skills: artificial circulation and artificial respiration. CPR is performed until the heart resumes beating, the patient is handed over to other medical help, or the first aider becomes too exhausted to continue.
