7 Bleeding, Wound Care and Trauma

Control bleeding, treat for shock, and care for the damaged tissue so that it may be reattached. Amputated and avulsed parts may be reattached if the tissue is cared for properly and the patient gets medical help quickly.

Amputations Amputations are the partial or complete severing of a body part. This can occur through a tearing force (laceration) such as a car accident or from being torn off in a machine. It can also be sliced (incision) off, such as with cutting tools and sharp machinery. Size dressings so that they cover the entire wound and extend bandages above and below the dressing. This helps apply pressure evenly and control bleeding.

Care of partial amputation or Avulsed tissue • Reposition a partially amputated part or tissue to its position of function (its normal position). • Use a thick sterile dressing, moistened if possible, against the wound. • Bandage securely in place.
