Premergency First Aid, CPR and AED Manual
7 Bleeding, Wound Care and Trauma
Care of completely amputated or avulsed tissue • Wrap the amputated part in a sterile dressing, well moistened if possible. • Keep amputated part shaded and cool. • If possible, seal the amputated part in a clean and waterproof plastic bag placed into a second bag or container containing ice.
Embedded objects Sometimes an object can become embedded in a wound. Nails, scissors, a pencil, glass, or any object that punctures the skin can remain stuck in the wound. First aid for embedded objects is the same as other wounds, but care must be taken to prevent the object from causing further damage. Never remove an object stuck in a wound. It can cause heavier bleeding and further damage.
• Label the bag containing the
amputated part with the time of accident and time it was stored. • Send amputated part to the hospital with the patient.
