7 Bleeding, Wound Care and Trauma

Scalp When there is a wound to the head, you must look for a possible skull and neck injury (See muscle, bone, and joint injury, Chapter 8). The scalp has many small blood vessels. Although bleeding from a head wound often looks severe, it is usually easily controlled. If you suspect a skull fracture or penetrating injury, avoid direct pressure and do not probe the wound. Cover with a thick, absorbent dressing and bandage securely.

Any changes to or altered level of consciousness may indicate a brain injury. Ensure you call 911 and get the patient assessed.
