7 Bleeding, Wound Care and Trauma

Jellyfish There are many different species of jellyfish around the world. While all jellyfish have the ability to sting, only certain species in tropical waters have venom strong enough to be considered a life threat. Jellyfish found in Canada generally cause only discomfort – a mild stinging or burning sensation. The exception may be a patient who experiences a severe allergic reaction or a patient who has been stung multiple times by a ‘school’ or group of jellyfish. During the scene assessment, have the patient exit the water. Wear gloves to prevent the transfer of any venom from the patient’s skin to your own. Flush the area with vinegar to prevent any stingers from releasing more venom. Do not use cold water as this will allow the stingers to release more venom.
