8 Muscle, Bone and Joint Injuries

Spinal Motion Restriction (SMR) First aid for spinal injury focuses on spinal motion restriction, Any movement of the next or spine can cause additional and possibly devastating injury. Maintain spinal motion restriction (SMR) as quickly as possible while ensuring no life threats. SMR keeps the cervical and spinal column straight, helping to prevent further injury and maintain patient comfort.

Applying Spinal Motion Restriction Begin by directing a bystander to kneel behind the patient and place their hands on either side of the patient’s head, supporting it in the neutral, in-line position. If no bystander is available, do this yourself. Avoid covering the patient’s ears.

If a second person is available, have them steady and support the patient’s feet. Do not pull on the feet or apply traction to the patient in any way. The purpose is to support and steady the patient in the position found, while restricting any motion on the spine.
