8 Muscle, Bone and Joint Injuries
Rolling a suspected spinal injury 1. To clear the patient’s airway and to check the back for D.O.T.S., or to place the patient on a backboard to extricate, rolling a patient with a suspected spinal injury takes additional care. Possible spinal injury requires spinal motion restriction and “log roll” so that the patient’s entire body moves as one unit.
2. Roll the patient on a count of three, maintaining the head and neck in-line with the body as shown below.

3. Continue to support the head and neck as you clear the airway, and check the back for D.O.T.S. or position a backboard.
