Premergency First Aid, CPR and AED Manual

8 Muscle, Bone and Joint Injuries

First Aider in Action: Part 4 Meghan finishes the 911 call and begins a more thorough exam of the patient, assessing the different areas of pain and exposing the skin to look for wounds. She does not roll the patient, but carefully slides her hands underneath to feel the back and check for bleeding. She finds no deformity or open wounds, but there is already swelling and bruising on Veronica’s ankle and wrist. Security arrives with a first aid kit, and Meghan puts a blanket over the patient and applies cold packs to her wrist and ankle. Veronica complains of thirst and asks for some water but Meghan explains that she can’t have any. Meghan continues to reassure the patient as she be-gins taking another set of vital signs. Why can’t the patient have water? What can be done for a patient’s thirst?
