Splinting a knee Splinting of a knee is usually done in the leg’s natural position of function, in-line with the body and slightly bent at the knee. If the leg or knee is not in this position, support it as you gently try and move it into position. A conscious patient may have already done this or be able to do this by themselves. If there is any resistance or undue pain, do not try to reposition the limb but instead splint it in the position found.

Padding the splint in the natural hollows of the body supports the limb in its natural relaxed position, its position of function.
