Premergency First Aid, CPR and AED Manual

8 Muscle, Bone and Joint Injuries

Summary First aid for muscle, bone, and joint injury focuses on supporting the injury and preventing movement that can cause additional injury and pain. Remember to follow the steps of PSM, ensuring safety and addressing life threats before addressing any other injury. Muscle bone and joint injury have similar signs and symptoms. The method of injury and the history should guide you in your assessment. Patients should have a medical assessment of all but the most minor injury. Prompt first aid involving rest of the injured area, ice or cold packs, compression, and elevation will help reduce pain, swelling, and recovery times for the patient.
