5. Why can’t the patient have water? The patient may require surgery and cannot have any food or drink at this time. 6. What can be done for a patient’s thirst? If transport is delayed, a moistened cloth or paper towel can be used to wet the patient’s lips. 7. Does the patient need to be immobilized before going to the hospital. Why or why not? The patient does need to be immobilized. The MOI suggests possible head and spinal injury. The patient needs their cervical spine protected and to be transported on a backboard.

Additionally, areas of DOTS should be splinted to reduce movement and make the patient more comfortable. 8. Why did the paramedics put the cervical collar on before the splints? After ensuring no life threats exist, protecting the cervical spine is the priority.
