9 Other Emergencies

Inhaled poison • Ensure your safety. Assess for poisonous gas or vapour. • Supply fresh air to the patient or move them to fresh air. • Provide first aid for difficulty breathing. • Provide first aid for shock.

Contact poison • Ensure your safety. Wear gloves. • Brush dry residue off skin and remove any clothing that has been in contact with the poison. • Flush the area with a large amount of water. • Be careful not to contaminate yourself or another part of the patient’s body. • Wash the area of contact thoroughly with soap and water. • Provide first aid for shock.
