Poisoning and Drug Overdose Assessment and First Aid Scene Assessment - Scene Safety Call 911/Get Help/Get First Aid Kit/ Get an AED Protect yourself from any poison Determine MOI Activate 911 for any unconcious patient Primary Assessment • ABC’s - Treat life threats • If evidence of poisoning, call the poison control centre Secondary Assessment • History and vital signs Ongoing Care/Transport • Monitor LOC and ABCs • Be prepared to provide CPR if breathing becomes ineffective or ceases • Place patient in recovery position and keep warm • Reassure the patient.
Hand-Off and Documentation • Get medical help for any patient that is unconscious or that you suspect has been poisoned. • Provide as much information as possible regarding the what, how, where and when of the suspected poison. Opioid Overdose and Naloxone (Narcan) There is an increased incidence of opioid-related deaths and the prevalence of overdose education and naloxone (narcan) distribution programs that equip laypeople to provide first aid in an opioid-related emergency. A responder who has naloxone available may administer naloxone (narcan). Basic life support (CPR/AED) should not be delayed to administer naloxone.
