First Aid for Emergency Childbirth Stage 3 – Final labour • Prepare to deliver the placenta. This usually takes up to 20 minutes but may take longer. • Gently massage the patient’s lower abdomen to stimulate delivery of the placenta. • Well the placenta is delivered, protect it in a clean container. • There may be some vaginal bleeding after the placenta is delivered. Firmly massage the uterus as this helps it contract and control the bleeding. The uterus may be felt as a hard mass in the lower abdomen. • Use thick, bulky dressings, or sanitary pads to absorb any bleeding.

• If the patient continues to bleed, provide care for shock and get medical help quickly.
