9 Other Emergencies

Physical or Sexual assault Assault causes both physical and emotional injury and can be devastating to the patient. In addition to any physical injuries, the patient may be experiencing severe emotional shock. This is especially true for a victim of sexual assault. Emotional shock may cause the patient to seem dazed or withdrawn. They may be fearful and shy away from contact, or they can react hysterically or violently if touched. Hyperventilation, seizures, and unconsciousness are all possible as is a cationic, or unresponsive, state. First aid for assault or sexual assault includes treating life threats and any injuries found. It also includes general first aid for psychiatric emergencies and preserving any evidence of a crime. This may include the patient’s clothing and own body and can be a difficult subject to talk about.

First Aid Anxiety Attack and Hysteria

Ensure patient privacy. Try to provide a quiet place away from onlookers for the patient to calm down. Listen calmly and do not contradict or question what the patient tells you. Be sympathetic but firmly positive. If needed, give first aid for hyperventilation (See Chapter 3, Airway and Breathing) or any other signs and symptoms. Stay with the patient until handover.
