10 Lifting and Moving

Providing first aid to an injured or ill patient is usually best done at the scene, but this may not always be possible. Conditions affecting your decision to move the patient include: • There is a continued risk of injury due to environmental conditions. • There are life threatening hazards to you or the patient such as fire, flood, or toxic substance. • First aid can not be provided in the location or the position the patient is found in. You must transport the patient to the next level of care. Any time you need to move a patient, special care must be taken to avoid injury to yourself and other first aiders as well as the patient. Use proper body mechanics to prevent injury when lifting and moving.

Use of proper lifting and moving techniques reduces the chance of injury to yourself and the patient. Always plan moves to be of the shortest possible distance to a location that allows you to provide safe and effective aid. Utilize all resources available to you including any bystanders to help support the patient as much as possible during the move. fore and aft lift
