10 Lifting and Moving
Method of Lifting and Moving The best way for a patient to be moved is by properly trained medical personnel with appropriate equipment. This may not be possible in all situations. How you decide to move a patient is influenced by a number of considerations: Why are you moving the patient? When you are transporting a patient with a broken leg to medical help, you typically have time to gather materials and prepare, but if you or the patient is in imminent danger, such as from an approaching fire, you may have no choice but to move quickly. What are the patient’s injuries? A patient with a dislocated elbow is easier to move than a patient with a sprained ankle.
Emergency moves An emergency move is used to move a patient before assessment and aid are provided when there is a potential danger and you or the patient must move to a safe place to avoid possible serious harm or death. The only other time you would use an emergency move is if the patient’s location or position prevents you from properly assessing or treating life threats to them or to others, such as in a vehicle. How many people do you have available to help? The number of people available effects the method you choose.
